A Winning Atmosphere

I live in the St. Louis, Missouri area.

The St Louis Cardinals have a tremendous farm system.  They have A, AA, AAA ball clubs that consistently produce quality pitchers, outfielders, infielders, hitters, etc.  The players go from one winning team up the ladder to the next winning team until they finally reach their major league destination and dream, the St Louis Cardinals.  Each level produces winning teams in their respective divisions and in their respective levels because they have good leadership and great coaching at each of those levels so that when the major league ‘rookie’ reaches St Louis, all he needs is a little grooming to adjust to the big league mindset and the higher level of competition.  Sometimes they will come up to the majors and then go back to the minors to work on certain little problems that need adjusting.  But they keep coming back until one day they become a success at the major league level.  Year after year, the St Louis Cardinals have a good supply of ‘rookies’ to call upon in the time of need.  And year after year great players are brought up and wind up staying in the big leagues for many years to fulfill their dreams of being a major league baseball player.  It’s easy to develop ‘winning’ players in a ‘winning’ atmosphere!

The Chicago Cubs have a good farm system.  They have A, AA, AAA ball clubs that consistently produce pitchers, outfielders, infielders, hitters, etc.  The players go from one team up the ladder to the next team until they finally reach their major league destination and dream, the Chicago Cubs.  Each level produces good teams in their respective divisions and in their respective levels because they have good leadership and great coaching at each of those levels so that when the major league ‘rookie’ reaches Chicago, all he needs is some grooming to adjust to the big league mindset and the higher level of competition.  Sometimes they will come up to the majors and then go back to the minors to work on certain little problems that need adjusting.  But they keep coming back until one day they become a player at the major league level.  Year after year, the Chicago Cubs have a good supply of ‘rookies’ to call upon in the time of need.  And year after year great players are brought up and wind up being traded to another organization in the big leagues and spend many years as a major league baseball player someplace other than Chicago.  It’s difficult to develop ‘winning’ players in a ‘losing’ atmosphere!

There is a big difference between the first two paragraphs.  The word ‘winning’ keeps appearing in the first paragraph and is noticeably absent in the second paragraph.  It’s no accident that in general, the players in St Louis become successful at a far greater ratio than do those arriving in Chicago.  There are a lot of variables and I am very much aware of that.  But, I am convinced that the biggest difference is the word, ‘winning’!  The St Louis farm system keeps producing ‘winning’ teams playing in a ‘winning’ atmosphere.  They are used to ‘winning’ their divisions year after year.  They have a ‘winning’ mindset when they arrive at the major league level!

Don’t get me wrong, the Cubs have produced some winning players as well, but not nearly as many as the Cardinals.  The Cubs have not won a World Series on over 100 years while the Cardinals have 10 under their collective belts.  And it’s largely due to the atmosphere, the mindset, the ‘winning’ environment in which the players develop.

This applies to any business in which we are involved. . .

We must be very careful about those with whom we choose to ‘hang out’.  Surround yourself with successful people and you will be successful.   Surround yourself with unsuccessful people and you will become unsuccessful.  Surround yourself with happy people and you will be happy; surround yourself with unhappy people and very soon you will become unhappy!

“Winning is not a sometime thing; it’s an all time thing. You don’t win once in a while, you don’t do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.“
